Sick of snow, flues, and Vista
So the last few weeks I have been dealing with lots or snow and at least two different flues. I am finally recovering and the snow has melted some. So I can get back to life. I have started my new job, which was a real challenge since I was recovering from the flu. I think I am going to really like it at this place. The people are great and I see a lot of opportunities.

There has been one issue though. The Laptop I was given has Vista on it. About a year ago I switched my personal laptop to be a Mac Book Pro. That was one of the best experiences I ever had. I heard of the horror stories of people switching to Vista and thought it couldn't really be that bad. I mean there were issues when I switched to the Mac and it is usually just learning to do things differently. WELL I WAS WRONG.

VISTA IS HORRIBLE!!! It is so bad I find it hard to describe it with out sounding like a complaining anti M$ flamer.

When I switched from 98 to XP I liked the switch. (Yes I skipped 98 V2 aka ME) XP ran fast, was more stable, the UI fit my mental picture more, and all my applications still ran. It is the complete opposite with Vista. Standard Apps that I download and try to install don't work. Yes just the install does not work some times! I mean how can you frag up an OS so install programs fail. The apps that fail don't do anything to weird either. I mean major apps too like WSAD 5.1! BUT THE WORST PROBLEM HAS TO BE FILE COPY. I heard SP1 for Vista includes a patch to improved File Copy Speed. I though how could that be so important. I mean no one would release on OS if file copy was that bad. Boy was I wrong. I tried to unzip some files and they took over an hour! I then unzipped them on my personal XP box and they took less than a minute! "WHAT! You must be lying." Is what I would say to someone who told me that, but it's true. CVS checkouts were a pain too. Taking hours to copy down the data. Then simple file downloading and uploading to my web based email is painful. Microsoft you really failed this time. Do the right thing and recall Vista. These are not adoption issues. Adoption issues are like how you make it a default so Wireless networks have to broadcast their SID. The issues I list above are major flaws.

Oh yeah one more thing. Take a lesson from Apple. When it needs to run something in Admin mode at least I understand that is what it is asking me. The "Security Pop Ups" in Vista are a complete pain and don't make sense at first.

Will they let you put Kubuntu on the laptop? I haven't used Vista yet, but you're making me scared to try it.

They hinted at it. Right now the IT guy is on vacation. When he gets back he is supposed to have a disk that will downgrade my PC to XP. If that happens then I'll leave things as is. If that doesn't happen then I will look at putting something else on there or using a different laptop.

Amen brother. I thought I'd go along when I bought my new laptop - you know - just to see what it was all about. It's been a few months, I still effing hate it, and I can't see the point. XP was fine.

Vista, to me, smells like a marketing department trying to pay for its existence.

AMEN! Also it was pushed out way to soon. I remember hearing many of the beta testers saying that it wasn't ready when they released it. I can't believe though that it is still this effed up.
